Have you heard? Animal shelters around OK are full and struggling to find forever homes for dogs and cats. These animals may have been picked up as strays, discarded by owners who can no longer provide for them or surrendered to shelters for some reason, valid or not. Regardless, as an animal lover, I encourage everybody to help in whatever way they can.
I recently ordered a dog crate from Chewy and although the size fit the weight of my dog, it did not fit length-wise because she stretches out to sleep. When I contacted Chewy to return the crate, I was told to donate it where needed. I am now a Chewy fan for such a generous gesture. And the crate is going to the Claremore Animal Shelter, where I hope it will help a family take a dog home.
I am working on two books, and one is about a very lucky little duck. Watch for it this fall.
They’re wondrous blessings, too.
With paws and whiskers, wings and fins, They offer praise to you.
O Lord, you call us to embrace These creatures in our care.
May we show kindness, love and grace To all pets everywhere.*
Readers, I remind time and time again of my love for animals. I pray that love is reflected by my spoken and written words and my actions. If you are an Oklahoma neighbor, please consider adopting your next pet. I am sad that the Claremore Animal Shelter had to euthanize many cats and kittens that were unclaimed and unwanted.
Another reminder, my home church, First United Methodist in Claremore, is hosting a Blessing of the Animals Service Sunday, Oct. 8, 3:30 p.m. in the downtown gazebo park. Take your pawed, feathered and finned friends to be blessed.
My illustrators, Mollee Cummins and Cheryl Proffitt, have joined me in completing another book for your readers. This one is about Canadian geese that live in Oklahoma. Watch for Allie’s Geese.
O God, Your Creatures Fill the Earth*
Friends and family already know I love everything about animals – having them, being around them, reading and writing about them.
I recently discovered a delightful hymn* about animals, and with the author’s permission, I am quoting it here, and will do so in future blogs.
O God, your creatures fill the earth with wonder and delight, And every living thing has worth and beauty in your sight. So playful dolphins dance and swim; Your sheep bow down and graze. Your songbirds share a morning hymn To offer you their praise.
I am currently working on a new illustrated book about God’s creatures. Just like my children’s story, Four Furry Friends, this one is based on a true story given to me by a friend. The title is Allie’s Geese, and it will be available in a few weeks.
Meanwhile, my friend Sandy Logan has a wonderful pair of books about a dear donkey, and is working on another in a planned series of five. For Oklahoma shoppers, her Micah and Micah’s Cross and my Four Furry Friends can be purchased at Boarding House Books in Claremore and Another Chapter Bookstore in Owasso. These stores are totally different yet both are fun shopping stops for readers of all ages and interests.
I wish you joy in reading. Best friends can be found in books.
*O God, Your Creatures Fill the Earth by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette. She and her husband, Bruce are co-pastors. Contract her at bcgillette@Comcast.net for permission to use hymn in your church.
My family members, friends and readers already know me as an animal lover. I am excited to tell you that I have begun work on two more stories for children that will reflect that love. Like Four Furry Friends both are based on true stories and show loving care of God’s creatures. My artist friend Cheryl Proffitt has agreed to illustrate these little books for me. Watch for them.
Also in the works, the second in my Christian Romance trilogy – Tulips on Tuesday. If you enjoyed reading about Knight, Gwen, Mouse and Homer in Magnolia Monday , they’re back in the next book – and they have four-legged friends!
For now you can find Magnolia Monday and Four Furry Friends at Boardinghouse Books in Claremore, at Amazon.com and after this week, at Another Chapter Bookstore in Owasso. Both stores make for great shopping fun. Happy reading!
During Holy Week, more than any other time of year, I am thankful to be a Child of God. Today I remember the pain Jesus suffered for me, and Sunday I will rejoice that the cross is empty and Jesus is with our Father. This is also a time to focus on our commandment to “Love one another.”
I pray that the words I write will reflect that focus.
Currently working on the second in a trilogy of Christian romances, I plan to have Tulips on Tuesday available to readers in a few months.
Attention Animal Lovers: I keep reading media stories about animal shelters being full and adoption fees being reduced to help empty the shelters. If you are ready to add a new four legged friend to your family, now is the time. The first one of you who contacts me with proof that you have adopted a pet will get an autographed copy of my book Four Furry Friends, shipped postpaid to your address. The book is a true story about four feral felines who have a lifelong friend to care for them. If you want to read it but aren’t ready for a furry friend of your own, the book is available at Amazon.com, or at Boardinghouse Books in Claremore. Happy reading and Happy Holidays.
